Description

Yveltal for Pokeddex 2013 that I just completed despite being a few months late. There will be a dump with all the paintings I did for the challenge but I wanted to upload this one separately as well.
This piece is for favourite gen 6 legendary and even though I love Xerneas's majestic beauty a huge bird of death takes the spot for me. The design is just amazing and I love the concept. Yveltal is definitely a fearsome beast that fits its role perfectly.
I quite like this design. Yveltal's "hands" are pretty interesting. While I don't think of them as real hands I didn't want to make them just feathers either. In this design I tried to make them look more like spikes, claws, extensions of the bones in Yveltal's wings while making them blend in the feathers in the wings. And instead of making the head pieces feathers I drew them as horns.

I hope you like it! And stay tuned for the mega dump!

I love seeing all Yveltal interpretations, just beautiful. I'm so glad you continue to do traditional art despite digital seeming to completely flood out traditional when it comes to internet art (in my experience). Always incredible shading and colors. I'm not skilled enough in watercolors to get the texturing as well as you with the values. D: I almost see the spikes on the wings here being kinda like spurs or like Hoatzin claws as vestigial claws maybe...?

I love Yveltal equally as much as Lugia, and I almost see it as the anti-Lugia (although there is already the Shadow Lugia) -existing to destroy and indifferent to suffering while Lugia actively tries reducing suffering and is compassionate. I like it as both the bird interpretation or the beastly wyvern interpretation. The bird one is obvious (the whole Nordic mythology route) with the description of feathers, overall shape, toothless mouth, and talons. However, I equally enjoy the wyvern-like portrayal (the yve- part of the name might contribute I suppose) since it appears to have more solid distinct fingers kinda like Lugia's hand-flying (which is more traditionally a mechanism of bats than "arm-flying" birds) and that it looks to me to have a more bony/fleshy tail seems more pseudo-bird/non-avian reptilian-like (versus birds having the tiny pygostyles for tails).

Either way, this terrifying edgester caught my heart when I played the games and adore it. I had to go the "Y" way even though almost everyone else I knew was going "X" for pretty life deer. This monster and its sounds are atrociously beautiful and I like it being so many things at once, just like so many Pokémon are -so many influences and multiple creatures. I know this is an older piece, but I still like coming back to your different works!
