Yveltal by ShadeofShinon Yveltal by ShadeofShinon
Yveltal for Pokeddex 2013 that I just completed despite being a few months late. There will be a dump with all the paintings I did for the challenge but I wanted to upload this one separately as well.
This piece is for favourite gen 6 legendary and even though I love Xerneas's majestic beauty a huge bird of death takes the spot for me. The design is just amazing and I love the concept. Yveltal is definitely a fearsome beast that fits its role perfectly.
I quite like this design. Yveltal's "hands" are pretty interesting. While I don't think of them as real hands I didn't want to make them just feathers either. In this design I tried to make them look more like spikes, claws, extensions of the bones in Yveltal's wings while making them blend in the feathers in the wings. And instead of making the head pieces feathers I drew them as horns.

I hope you like it! And stay tuned for the mega dump!

Don't really understand why Nintendo felt the need to censor what he is with 'destruction'. He's clearly the Pokemon of death; besides being the opposite of the Life Pokemon, isn't that the reason for the vulture based design? Oh well.

I'd have to saw as awesome as the picture is, it's a bit difficult to make out the fingers/spikes/claws/whatever. I know you mentioned about making them blend in with the feathers, but I think you made them blend in too well as it took me quite a bit of effort to see them as anything other than large feathers. I think possibly the pose might have something to do with that, as the wings being in the position they are makes me see the spikes as sort of a layer of feathers beneath.

But while I say this, I do think it's an awesome picture and it doesn't mean for a second that I dislike the picture in any way. I could never manage something like this, so that stands for itself as how this is good.

I wouldn't necessarily say censor because it's still obvious. It's good to keep in mind that these games are still vastly targeted to young kids as well as the older die hard fans who can handle subjects like chaos and total destruction not to mention death. I'd say it's more about toning it down for the more sensitive players but still leave it obvious enough for the older ones to figure out. I think they did well with that.

I would also say it is the pose that makes the spikes blend in so well. If the wings were properly spread out you could tell the spikes apart from the bundles of feathers more easily as they would stick out of the wing's form better. I personally think they're better and make more sense to me when they're more a part of the wing rather than some alien forms that stick out. I also think it's better for the functionality of the wings. I would put more time into thinking how the designs I do would realistically work but I chose to keep these paintings simple in that regard.

Anyway, thank you very much for your comment!

I think yveltal's a similar case with talonflame as one of those pokémon I like your version of better. The more realistic birdlike look works for me more because for some reason I find the Y-shape a tad weird. Maybe it doesn't hurt that you're just so damn awesome at drawing birds. This thing looks magnificent.

I like what you did with the wing spines. I think similar to houndoom, they'd probably read better being more distinctively different in colour from the primary feathers, especially because they're sort of hard to notice otherwise. They also might stand out more being a bit longer, which would make sense because they are long enough to break the silhouette of yveltal's wings in the original design, but maybe you didn't do that because that wouldn't make sense (I'm not the most knowledgeable on avian anatomy). In any case, it was a really cool idea and definitely adds to yveltal's deathly feel. You really did this brutal bird to justice.

Yveltal's shape is quite peculiar but I think it's a really awesome design nevertheless. They did a great job on the Kalos trio.
You're right about making the wing spine things more visible, some people were complaining that I had left them out. I think I justified it with the lack of space on paper (sometimes I wish scaling/cropping would be possible in trad. art) and also with the other feathers not being spread out. I don't know if a different colour would be justified enough, I mean, the "fingers" are black in the original design, but perhaps a more distinctive texture difference from the ordinary feathers would've done the trick. I will think about this if/when I draw Yveltal again.
Anyway, thank you!

Never pictured Yveltal as a bird in all honesty.
