Yveltal by ShadeofShinon Yveltal by ShadeofShinon
Yveltal for Pokeddex 2013 that I just completed despite being a few months late. There will be a dump with all the paintings I did for the challenge but I wanted to upload this one separately as well.
This piece is for favourite gen 6 legendary and even though I love Xerneas's majestic beauty a huge bird of death takes the spot for me. The design is just amazing and I love the concept. Yveltal is definitely a fearsome beast that fits its role perfectly.
I quite like this design. Yveltal's "hands" are pretty interesting. While I don't think of them as real hands I didn't want to make them just feathers either. In this design I tried to make them look more like spikes, claws, extensions of the bones in Yveltal's wings while making them blend in the feathers in the wings. And instead of making the head pieces feathers I drew them as horns.

I hope you like it! And stay tuned for the mega dump!

Don't really understand why Nintendo felt the need to censor what he is with 'destruction'. He's clearly the Pokemon of death; besides being the opposite of the Life Pokemon, isn't that the reason for the vulture based design? Oh well.

I'd have to saw as awesome as the picture is, it's a bit difficult to make out the fingers/spikes/claws/whatever. I know you mentioned about making them blend in with the feathers, but I think you made them blend in too well as it took me quite a bit of effort to see them as anything other than large feathers. I think possibly the pose might have something to do with that, as the wings being in the position they are makes me see the spikes as sort of a layer of feathers beneath.

But while I say this, I do think it's an awesome picture and it doesn't mean for a second that I dislike the picture in any way. I could never manage something like this, so that stands for itself as how this is good.

I wouldn't necessarily say censor because it's still obvious. It's good to keep in mind that these games are still vastly targeted to young kids as well as the older die hard fans who can handle subjects like chaos and total destruction not to mention death. I'd say it's more about toning it down for the more sensitive players but still leave it obvious enough for the older ones to figure out. I think they did well with that.

I would also say it is the pose that makes the spikes blend in so well. If the wings were properly spread out you could tell the spikes apart from the bundles of feathers more easily as they would stick out of the wing's form better. I personally think they're better and make more sense to me when they're more a part of the wing rather than some alien forms that stick out. I also think it's better for the functionality of the wings. I would put more time into thinking how the designs I do would realistically work but I chose to keep these paintings simple in that regard.

Anyway, thank you very much for your comment!

I think yveltal's a similar case with talonflame as one of those pokémon I like your version of better. The more realistic birdlike look works for me more because for some reason I find the Y-shape a tad weird. Maybe it doesn't hurt that you're just so damn awesome at drawing birds. This thing looks magnificent.

I like what you did with the wing spines. I think similar to houndoom, they'd probably read better being more distinctively different in colour from the primary feathers, especially because they're sort of hard to notice otherwise. They also might stand out more being a bit longer, which would make sense because they are long enough to break the silhouette of yveltal's wings in the original design, but maybe you didn't do that because that wouldn't make sense (I'm not the most knowledgeable on avian anatomy). In any case, it was a really cool idea and definitely adds to yveltal's deathly feel. You really did this brutal bird to justice.

Yveltal's shape is quite peculiar but I think it's a really awesome design nevertheless. They did a great job on the Kalos trio.
You're right about making the wing spine things more visible, some people were complaining that I had left them out. I think I justified it with the lack of space on paper (sometimes I wish scaling/cropping would be possible in trad. art) and also with the other feathers not being spread out. I don't know if a different colour would be justified enough, I mean, the "fingers" are black in the original design, but perhaps a more distinctive texture difference from the ordinary feathers would've done the trick. I will think about this if/when I draw Yveltal again.
Anyway, thank you!

Personally I don't see a dragon in it. It is more bird like and it doesn't even have dragon typing. People often portray it as a wyvern which I don't nuderstand, especially because it's rumored that Kalos legendaries are based on Norse myths (which is my headcanon as well). Based on that myth, Xerneas would represent the three stags, Zygarde the serpent Niddhoggrr and Yveltal would be the unnamed eagle (note, eagle is a bird) that all dwell in the world-tree Yggdrasil.

I have heard of the Norse myth origin and I commend Nintendo for it, but Yvelatal just automaticaly jumped out as a dragon to me with it's veins and smooth seeming skin.

Omg. This is painting? Incredible! Wahh. The way you added the whites just so that it looks like light is shining on him and the way you blended the other colors together is absolutely stunning! Incredible :D

Yep, this is a watercolour painting. :> And I didn't add any whites afterwards, I just didn't paint those spots when I painted. That is how watercolour works, you work from lighter to darker. Adding white ink/paint/etc. afterwards doesn't look as good as the paper's white. In fact, white ink often looks quite stuffy.
Anyway, thank you! :>

Aweeessooome! XD I freaking love Yvetal, and was so proud of myself for catching him without having to restart the game XD I love how this picture turned out, and I'm glad I can see it in your style!

Yvetal also showed me how hilarious Pokemon Amie can be when you're petting a legendary that's easily thirty times the size of any other Pokemon XD My Yvetal Alduin makes a valuable member on my team, just don't poke him in the eye...he doesn't like that o.o

Thank you very much!

I also caught Yveltal really easily. I think it took me max. 6 balls to get him. I wouldn't have minded a longer battle, the theme was so amazing to listen to.

I think giant Pokemon are wonderful in Amie. Although it is kinda amusing to pet and feed a giant bird of death.

Yeah, same. Yveltal is more amazing than any cheesy dragon legendary would've ever been. And even the dragon legendary of gen 6 was so untypical that it was freaking cool.
Yveltal though. A dark phoenix of death. What's not to love?

I've seen it done more often as a wyvern so a bird is an interesting take on it.

I see Yveltal as a very dragonic raptor. Like a phoenix, but a dark one. I can see why people would portray it as a wyvern but it doesn't fit with my headcanon and with the rumour according to which the three legendaries are based on Norse mythology and Yveltal would be based on an unnamed eagle that lives in Yggdrasil, the world tree, with Niddhoggr (a serpent, Zygarde) and three stags (Xerneas). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yggdrasi…

I like Yveltal because it's a very dark turn on the phoenix image. And there's that kickass design.

I doubt I'll ever get over your level of realism - it's just amazing.

Thank you! I've always seen Yveltal as a dragonic bird, like a phoenix but dark. Also, I like to believe that the legendary trio of gen 6 is based on the Norse myth about creatures that dwell in the roots and branches of Yggdrasil, the life tree. Yveltal would be the unnamed eagle, Xerneas the three stags and Zygarde Niddhoggr, the serpent that eats the tree's roots. Also, if Yveltal was actually a wyvern I think it would've had dragon typing.

I tried to pull an effect like that on the wings of an Yveltal I drew but couldn't quite do it, I ended up drawing it more like a dragon for it to fit the way I pictured it. Great representation there. Kudos!

Thank you! I've always seen Yveltal as a dragonic bird or a dark phoenix. The rumored relation to Norse mythology also suggests that Yveltal is based on the unnamed eagle that lives on Yggdrasil, the life tree, and not a dragon by any means.
