Desert Reign by ShadeofShinon Desert Reign by ShadeofShinon
[Desert Reign]

In a place where life ceased to exist a long time ago is the heart of their home. The bones they carry and build their nests from are signs that they are truly the rulers of this barren place. Their endurance is second to none, and to them any sign of weakness is a sign of prey. They are the vultures and this is their reign.

Mandibuzz for "Draw Every Pokemon". This is my last contribution to the project. It has been a lot of fun drawing all these Pokemon and see different artists give their share for the project.
Now I'll have to come up with something else to spend my time on.

Anyway, I wasn't a fan of Mandibuzz when it was first introduced and I still find the official art very derpy but after doing this redesign and doing some research about this Pokemon I gotta admit it is pretty cool. I might be a bit biased, I have a thing for big badass birds. Gotta love the typing, though.
As for the picture, some of you might have seen me working on it on my streams and know how much effort I put into it. I am actually very proud of this one, and yet again I surprised myself by how patient I can be. Even if this consumed a lot of time I don't think any of it was of waste. I enjoyed drawing this a lot and I am very pleased with the outcome, too. :>
Now, this was completely unintentional but I couldn't help noticing that almost exactly one year ago I drew a picture called "Desert Encounter". I didn't first realize I draw desert scenes so much but instead of changing the scenery I took this as a personal challenge to see how much I have improved during one year. There are a lot of differences between these two pictures but there are also some similarities that are probably more clear to me. But I daresay a lot of improvement has happened.
Right now I'm just happy I finally finished this and that the picture turned out better than I expected, for once.

I hope you like it!

Ahh, so those are mandibuzz. Took me a bit without the plumes.

Cool idea giving them face skulls. Impressive big ol' primary feathers as well. I've got to say I especially love this landscape. The sight of that super drawn out carcass of arceus-probably-doesn't-want-to-know-what the birds are perching and circling on filling up a big chunk of the foreground and stretching out over the horizon gives a great sense of death's infinite omnipresence. And the way the cracked-up wasteland ground looks caved in kind of like a bowl sort of gives it the feeling of being an inescapable pit, somewhere nobody leaves alive. Anyone who enters here is vulture food. Great work with your trademark subtle sunset as well. The dust grey clouds the sun's disappearing behind are really effective in completing the sense of hopeless desolation this desert's got.

And - do my eyes deceive me - is that a Lion King reference in the background? Hopefully there won't be any Bowling for Mandibuzz occurring any time soon.

Thank you very much! Great analyzing. I really appreciate how carefully you view my pieces instead of just quickly glancing at it. And you saw a lot. Even the Lion King reference. I was streaming the process of this piece and someone in the chat said that there could be a Donphan's skull in the background just like in The Lion King. And so I did it. Also, one more thing about the skulls, I'm not sure if I simply forgot to add the plumes or if I decided that they're not necessary with the skulls on. Personally I don't like the plumes, maybe that is why I came up with the skull idea in the first place.

Ahh, so they'd be under their little skull hats? Makes sense I guess.

What's the snakelike skeleton? A Garydos? Or maybe Raquaza?

I left that undecided so the viewer can make their own story.
But while I drew this I though it could be Gyarados. Rayquaza in my headcanon is basically a vital, unique creature and immortal - immortal as in it cannot die of old age but by a hand of a godslayer.
