Commission: snowwolf-suraku by ShadeofShinon Commission: snowwolf-suraku by ShadeofShinon
Commission for ~snowwolf-suraku. She wanted a Flygon, Suicune and Quilava done in watercolour.
I enjoyed doing this. I've never drawn Flygon before so it was really nice to finally get to draw one. Also, even though I draw Suicune a lot I never get tired of it. :D

I hope you like it!

This is undoubtedly the most realistic Suicune interpretation I have ever seen. The horns, the mane, and especially the face! No wolf, all Kirin. Finally, someone else truly understands!

Everybody always draws terribly misleading wolf versions of Suicune, and I will never understand the appeal to that type of concept.

This interpretation captures all of Suicune's Kirin features perfectly, which no one else ever attempts. If people actually bothered to check references for the original concepts of certain Pokémon, we'd have more accurate fan-art designs...

I'm glad to hear you agree with my views! It irks me a bit when people draw Suicune as a wolf. I have done that, too, but it was ages ago. When I draw realistic Pokemon I try to do some kind of research, find about their origins and try to make the design somewhat logical. I don't know how much logic you can apply when drawing Pokemon but still.
But yeah, it bothers me when people view the legendary beast trio as canines. They are called beasts, not dogs (I think the name "legendary dogs" might be a translation flaw or just a thing the fandom created). I think Bulbapedia might have all of their origins written in the bios. But as for what I've gathered from my research, Suicune is based on a Kirin, Raikou based on a thunder god that takes the form of a tiger and Entei is based on a Shisa (lion/dog kind of creature) or something similar. So Entei is the only one that has anything canine like in it, the rest are just something different. They're not dogs, not cats, but different mythical beasts.

I've actually been planning to make an actual picture explaining these things to people so maybe we would have less misconceptions.

It IS a translation flaw. I'm able to read a good deal of Japanese hiragana, katakana and kanji, and the symbol used for "beast" can also be interpreted as "dog". Some translators interpreted the title wrong.

Also, even though Suicune is largely based on the Kirin, the main reference is actually Fujin, the god of the North Wind, who happens to wear leopard skins... which explains Suicune's white spots, and probably the cat-like anatomy as well (aside from the Kirin face).

This is one of my two favorite interpretations of Flygon with draconic characteristics <3
